This special, free event is a prelude to Peruvian guitarist Jorge Caballero’s concert for Cleveland Classical Guitar Society on October 26 at the Maltz Performing Arts Center. Jorge Caballero will be joined by singer Inayah Raheem as the two discuss the role of Black spirituals (religious folksongs created by enslaved Africans in America between the 17th and 19th centuries) in Western classical music, and in particular the three works on the concert program: Antonin Dvořák’s famous Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”, and two works by Black composers: a neglected work by Ulysses Kay in its first major performance in nearly 40 years, and a newly commissioned work by Thomas Flippin, all of which are inspired by spirituals. Jorge Caballero will perform excerpts from his concert, and Inayah Raheem will sing spirituals accompanied on guitar by Caballero, interspersed with dialogue by these artists about the incredible musical connections between Black spirituals and Western classical music.
